Title: "New Ways to Think" or Program/Project Management

Description: This workshop prepares managers and professionals for program planning and managing responsibilities in any industry. The workshop covers standards, guidelines, policies and directives, and focuses on planning, executing and managing large scale or simple projects. The workshop highlights the various management processes (life cycle, planning, writing, negotiating, creating) and their integration. Practical exercises are integrated into the workshop. Participants write a Statement of Work, draft a Work Breakdown Structure, design a Responsibility Matrix, draft a preliminary schedule, outline or review a Program Plan, understand the value and purpose of these documents, and conclude with a summary of lessons learned.

The workshop is customized in that attendees use projects from their own workplace to simulate the real world. Documents applicable to those settings will be developed. The importance of negotiating skills is highlighted. Individual and team exercises, and class discussions improve the learning process in that multiple sensory teaching methods are used.The team presentations allow the participants to review and summarize the lessons learned throughout the workshop

Who Should Attend: Managers and professionals who are actively seeking to improve the planning and managing function (program/project management) and who are interested in using program management controls as performance and quality measures.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • understand the major steps in the planning and managing process and their value in achieving success 
  • construct a preliminary yet proper Statement of Work and a logically structured Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), easily and simply
  • draft a schedule for the Work Breakdown Structure
  • create Responsibility Matrix and WBS Dictionary
  • draft a Program Plan 
  • apply visibility and controls appropriate for the project
  • use program controls as performance and quality measures
  • apply on-going functions of risk management, configuration management, conflict management

  • Program Start –up (standards, procedures,directives) to use on self and others
  • “Standard” management processes (life cycle, planning, negotiating) to apply, practice, and teach others
  • The value and ease of using “standard” management methods as program and quality measures in evaluating performance of self and when teaching others
  • Constructing program documentation (eg statement of work, work breakdown structure, requirements, schedules) made simple and easy
  • Understanding the use and purpose of program documentation in achieving program success and in evaluating performance
  • Asking the right questions when monitoring, tracking or overseeing projects
  • The importance of respect in words, actions, to apply, practice and teach others 
  • The value of fun in building teamwork when used by self and in teaching others
